Nathan Bennett, widely known as "Benny," is a pioneering figure in the development of mountain bike tourism in Japan. Originally from Dunedin, New Zealand, Benny launched MTB Japan Adventure Tours in 1996 after recognizing a unique opportunity in Japan’s emerging adventure tourism market. Since then, MTB Japan has become the country’s original and longest-running MTB tour operator.

With a background in motocross and a lifelong passion for speed, two wheels, and the outdoors, Benny brings a rare blend of technical skill, adventurous spirit, and deep terrain knowledge to every ride. Over nearly three decades, he has introduced more than 30,000 riders to Japan’s spectacular trails—and he’s nowhere near finished.

Benny is proudly sponsored by Specialized Bicycles, along with GoPro, Smith Optics, Deuter, INNO, AbsoluteBlack, and Ride Graphix. Still actively racing and participating in events, his experience spans a wide spectrum—from extreme competitions like RedBull Downtime and Mega Avalanche, to serving as Course Director for international events such as Grinduro Japan in Minakami.

Known for his versatility, Benny often describes himself as a “Jack of all trades, master of none,” humbly saying, “On a bike, there’s nothing I do badly, and nothing I do extremely well either.” But it's his connection to the mountains, hands-on approach to trail building, and love of gathering around a campfire with friends and guests—beer in hand, ride stories flowing—that truly define his legacy.

Off the bike, Benny is a dedicated family man, senior snowboard patroller in winter, former backcountry guide (Triforce), and proud husband and father of two. With nearly 30 years of experience and a lifetime of stories, he’s still just getting started—looking forward to riding with the next 30,000 adventurers who share his passion for two wheels, outdoors and adventure.
